Fort Jesus
When King Philip II of Spain was also ruler of Portugal, a fort was built to guard over the Port of Mombasa. The fort was named Fort Jesus, partly because the fort looked like a man from an aerial perspective and partly because King Philip II was a staunch Catholic. Fort Jesus has been recognized for its contribution to the religious history of Mombasa by being transformed into a historical museum that still stands today.
Muslim influence
When you examine the religious history of Mombasa, you will come to understand the role played by Muslims in the city. The Muslim influence is pervasive everywhere, starting from the texts by explorers who gave details about the Muslim inhabitants, extending to their activities as both skilled artisans and merchant traders. You may also see the Muslim influence in the clothing worn by the Muslim women who have to wear a head covering known as the hijaab.
