Kwale District Eye Centre

Kwale District Eye Charity Centre operating in a poor rural district on the Kenya Coast, was found in 1993 by Dr Helen Roberts, a UK trained ophthalmologist. Since then more than 32,000 new patients have been registered, and of these over 10,000 have had their sight restored.

The aim of the centre is to provide affordable, accessible eye care to combat the totally unnecessary rate of blindness in a very poor rural area. It focuses on primary eye health, ophthalmic and rehabilitation services within a defined catchment area.

The centre offers services particularly in the remote areas and the work is done by volunteers such as the village health committee members who are trained in recognizing blindness and counseling those afflicted to attend for treatment.

It also has an on- line shop with items ranging from including T- shirts in many sizes, coffee mugs to mouse mats and money thus collected provides the charity with a small income.
