North Coast of Mombasa

Head north from Mombasa, across the Nyali Bridge, and you arrive at the Kisauni headland, with its concentration of international- standard hotels running along the coastal strip from Nyali, through Bamburi and Shanzu and on to Kikambala. Nyali is known for its smart hotels, gracious houses and its 18- hole golf club.

Inland from here is the Bamburi Quarry Nature Park. Once a sprawling quarry run by a cement company, it has been transformed into a diverse eco- system of forest, grassland and fishponds. It is a wildlife sanctuary, home to a variety of animals including buffalo, giraffe, hippo and numerous smaller mammals and reptiles as well as a plethora of birds. Walking trails run through the forested areas.

One of Kenya's largest national marine parks - the 10 sq km Mombasa Marine National Park - lies off the Nyali headland. It is surrounded by a 200 sq km Marine National Reserve. At one end of the Nyali- Bamburi beach is the Mamba Crocodile Village, which draws large crowds every day to view the reptiles. Further along the coast is Kenya Marine land and Snake Park, where turtles, sting rays and sharks can be seen along with mambas and other snakes.
